Dr Smith : (Steve Redgrave)
Well, as a doctor, I really admire anyone who can continue to live their life to the full regardless of physical illness. Steve Redgrave is a perfect example of this. He was an Olympic rower, rowing is a big sport in the UK, and he won 5 consecutive gold medals at the Olympics! That means he was at the top of his sport for 20 years! Well, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 37, when he was in training for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. This meant he had to adjust his diet and inject himself with insulin up to 10 times a day. Nevertheless, he went on to win his fifth and final gold medal at those Olympics.
Paul : (The Williams sisters)
I love tennis as a sport. It has produced some really great champions, both male and female. It has also done a lot for gender equality. Billie Jean King, for example, won the « Battle of the Sexes » tennis match against Bobby Riggs. She was a great athlete and an amazing advocate for gender equality. The Williams sister are amazing too, and they’ve done a lot to close the pay gap in the sport. I’m sure they could beat a few of the male atheletes on the circuit – no problem !
