Joe : It’s amazing, I’ve just found this article that’s gone viral on what life was like 100 years ago.  Can you tell me if some of these things are true ?
Michele : How would I know ?
Joe : Well, you are old… older…
Michele : Thank you.  For a start, children were polite and respected their parents.
Joe : It says here that the life expectancy for men was 47.  That means 100 years ago, Dad would almost certainly be dead.
Michele : Charming.
Joe : Only 14% of homes had baths.  That’s disgusting !  And more than 95% of births took place at home.
Michele : Oh I’m happy that’s changed !
Joe : Listen to this one !  Women used to wash their hair only once a month !  And they used egg yolk for shampoo.  Yuck !
Michele : Does it say anything about food ?  I’m sure that’s changed a lot over the last 100 years.
Joe : It just says that people used to follow a strict weekly routine, for instance, on a Sunday they used to eat a roast lunch, and any leftover cold meats on a Monday, and any other leftovers on a Tuesday in a pie… And on a Friday, they used to eat fish.
Michele : Yes I remember that.  We used to eat fish and chips every Friday.  My mom always cooked food from fresh, none of these microwave meals.  Nowadays, people buy fast food and they don’t cook.  So today is Friday – do you fancy fish and chips ?
