Michele & Joe

Joe : Mum, can we have some popcorn in front of our movie tonight ?
Michele : Sure, there’s some in the cupboard.
Joe : The popcorn’s too high for me. Can you help me ?
Michele : Of course. Put it in the microwave, listen carefully, and when it stops popping, take it out.
Joe : Mum ? How does a microwave work ? I don’t see anything inside this… it’s like magic !
Michele : When we got our first microwave, I asked myself the same question. I looked it up and I discovered that the microwave was invented by accident! The inventor was working for a company who was developing microwave transmitters during World War II.
One day, he noticed that the bar of chocolate in his pocket was melting. The microwaves were cooking the bar of chocolate in his pocket ! After a little experimentation, he figured out how to concentrate the microwaves to heat food. He invented the first working microwave, and the first thing that he cooked in it was popcorn.
In 1947 I think, the company produced the first commercial microwaves. Would you believe they were nearly six feet tall and weighed almost 750 pounds ? It’s true !
They were also very expensive. They cost about $5,000, which would be almost more to $52,000 today.
Joe : Wow, I want to be an inventor when I grow up !
