The Dos and Don’ts of Business networking:

First of all, smile and introduce yourself. It sounds obvious, but many people are still standing – or even worse – waiting for someone to talk at networking events. Engage in conversations rather than waiting for someone else to start one. The goal is to meet as many people as possible!
Always stand when introduced, look the person in the eye and shake their hand. Sitting down shows a lack of respect for the other person.
The tried-and-true rule is to listen 80 percent of the time, ask questions 10 percent and share your own opinion 10 percent. People are often most interested giving their opinion, and sharing ideas. Ask them what they thought about the presentation that has just been made (or discussion, reading, etc.). People love talking about what they are passionate about; one of the oldest tricks in the book to get people to really engage with you is to ask lots of questions about their business: how it started, what they are offering and so on. Of course don’t interview them, but asking lots of questions and showing genuine interest helps move the conversation in a natural and mutually beneficial way.
When sharing your opinion, keep it positive or at least neutral. Be ready to socialize and be more charismatic. Don’t dominate the conversation. When describing your business, remember that your audience will quickly lose interest if you are too long winded. It’s best to speak honestly and truthfully about your work, your aspirations and the profession generally.
Don’t stand around looking at your phone. Keep your phone in your pocket. First, it’s unprofessional and second, it shows disinterest and a lack of maturity.
The business world has become more casual about language, but you should not use language that’s unprofessional or contains expletives. Always be respectful of others.
Exchange business cards at the end of your conversation – and wait a few weeks before getting in contact.
You’re now on the way to building your network!
